I am so thankful to serve as president of Tide4Christ this year! Despite everything going on in our world today, I am sure this group will be able to grow spiritually together this fall. Regardless of what capacity we serve Christ in, I know we will do our best to do so. It is very likely that you have felt immense stress lately. If this has been you, I promise I know how you feel. While the pandemic has transformed our lives, I have had opportunities to think about my own personal leadership.
As someone nominated as a leader of T4C, I do feel a bit of pressure for the group’s success this school year. While I am excited for the challenge, I pray I can do my part as an impactful leader. In fact, leadership seems to be a theme this year. Because it is a presidential election year, you are probably pondering which candidate will be the best leader for our country. You probably also have municipal and statewide elections you are voting for. We dissect these nominees. We put them under an excruciating spotlight trying to find their true morality. While they deserve this, any person running for political office has to think they are being treated a little unfairly. As a Christian, we don’t always view ourselves as leaders. You probably only do if you are blessed with a direct leadership role like as an elder, campus ministry officer, etc. However, it is important for us to realize that we are all leaders of our own personal salvation.
Acts 4:12 reminds us that “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” While Christ is the one who died for us, we have to be the ones who accept His sacrifice. If we as Christians continue in a life of sin, we completely devalue the death of Jesus Christ. This is ironic because His actions are the most valuable thing any man could ever do. Therefore, we must be responsible for our own walk with Christ.
One thing that is special about Christianity is that true faith forces a Christian to obey the Gospel. Acts 16:25-40 gives a great example of this. Paul and Silas study with a Philippian Jailer and he is eventually baptized. After that, his entire household also obeys the Gospel and they are baptized, too. Each of these people were taught by Paul and Silas, but they had to be the ones to accept Christ’s plan for them. The same is true for us today. It isn’t a preacher’s job to make sure we know the scripture. We can’t rely on the elders of the church to make sure we get to heaven. I would even dare to say it is not the Tide4Christ president’s job to individually know each member’s status with God. While it is important for all of these positions to aid in a Christian’s walk, we have to remember that God wants his servants to make the decision to follow Him themselves.
Today, realize that you are a leader. Your sins are what hung the Son of God on a cross. However, those sins can craft the most beautiful story. A story of someone who individually decides to follow Christ. Someone who loves Jesus with all their heart and is ready for Heaven with Him.
